A Conversation About Fuel Economy
- Fuel efficiency is an important factor in the world of automobiles and the global economy. There are a number of variables that play a part in the process of fuel consumption, such as an automobile's make, its condition, and the amount it is driven. The profusion of hybrid vehicles in the 1990s brought attention to the potentially adverse effects of excessive fuel consumption. In turn, this caused increased awareness of the benefits of fuel-efficient vehicles.
Environmental Benefits
- The exhaust and other emissions produced by vehicles are inevitably harmful to both the environment and personal health. A fuel-efficient vehicles does not eliminate these things. Fuel efficiency does, however, help reduce the amount of pollution. Fuel-efficient vehicles consume less gasoline per mile than other vehicles and therefore output less pollution. Hybrid vehicles are extremely fuel-efficient, though there are other types of pollution brought about by their reliance on electrical systems.
Personal Finance Benefits
- Optimizing your fuel efficiency will allow you to save a considerable amount of money. Although certain vehicles are better for use in urban as opposed to rural environments (and vice versa), a fuel-efficient vehicle will reduce your gasoline expenditures in either setting.
Socioeconomic Benefits
- The fuel economy is large and complex and is connected to many other aspects of the world economy. A fuel-efficient vehicle can help reduce the consumer demand for gasoline. This has a number of potentially beneficial effects. First, it allows consumers to allocate money to more domestic economic areas, thereby strengthening those areas. Second, it relieves some of the strain on the global fuel supply, which can help restore aspects of global and domestic economies and also allows for progress toward a more sustainable use of energy. Given that the world supply of petroleum is not infinite (it is a non-renewable resource), increasing fuel efficiency allows for more time to develop and perfect sustainable energy sources.
Ford Motor Company is ever-increasing it's portfolio of fuel sipping vehicles. Ford currently boasts three vehicles that get 40mpg.
The 2012 Ford Focus SE sedan with Super Fuel Economy Package (SFE) manages 28city and 40highway mpg. The Focus finds its economy by way of its 2.0L DOHC Ti-VCT direct-injection in-line four mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2012 Ford Fiesta SE with SFE sports 29city and 40highway mpg with its 1.6L DOHC Ti-VCT in-line four and PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission.
In addition to these fuel-economical vehicles there are several tips we all may use to increase our fuel economy in our every day lives.
- Watch Your Speed - aim for a constant speed
- Accelerate and Brake Smoothly - allow for more time to brake and accelerate gradually
- Idling - turn off the engine when idling for more than 30 seconds
- Tire Inflation - underinflated tires increase roling resistance and reduce economy
- Tune-Ups - keep your car in good operating condition, tune-ups and alignments
- Travel Light - remove excess weight to increase fuel economy
- Manage Climate Control - use it selectively to put less load on the engine
- Close Windows at Higher Speeds - decreses aerodynamic drag
- Lubrication - use the lubes recommended in the Owner Guide
- Consolidate Trips - combine errands into a single trip, plan your routes
