A Conversation About Fuel Economy
- Fuel efficiency is an important factor in the world of automobiles and the global economy. There are a number of variables that play a part in the process of fuel consumption, such as an automobile's make, its condition, and the amount it is driven. The profusion of hybrid vehicles in the 1990s brought attention to the potentially adverse effects of excessive fuel consumption. In turn, this caused increased awareness of the benefits of fuel-efficient vehicles.
Environmental Benefits
- The exhaust and other emissions produced by vehicles are inevitably harmful to both the environment and personal health. A fuel-efficient vehicles does not eliminate these things. Fuel efficiency does, however, help reduce the amount of pollution. Fuel-efficient vehicles consume less gasoline per mile than other vehicles and therefore output less pollution. Hybrid vehicles are extremely fuel-efficient, though there are other types of pollution brought about by their reliance on electrical systems.
Personal Finance Benefits
- Optimizing your fuel efficiency will allow you to save a considerable amount of money. Although certain vehicles are better for use in urban as opposed to rural environments (and vice versa), a fuel-efficient vehicle will reduce your gasoline expenditures in either setting.
Socioeconomic Benefits
- The fuel economy is large and complex and is connected to many other aspects of the world economy. A fuel-efficient vehicle can help reduce the consumer demand for gasoline. This has a number of potentially beneficial effects. First, it allows consumers to allocate money to more domestic economic areas, thereby strengthening those areas. Second, it relieves some of the strain on the global fuel supply, which can help restore aspects of global and domestic economies and also allows for progress toward a more sustainable use of energy. Given that the world supply of petroleum is not infinite (it is a non-renewable resource), increasing fuel efficiency allows for more time to develop and perfect sustainable energy sources.
Ford Motor Company is ever-increasing it's portfolio of fuel sipping vehicles. Ford currently boasts three vehicles that get 40mpg.
The 2012 Ford Focus SE sedan with Super Fuel Economy Package (SFE) manages 28city and 40highway mpg. The Focus finds its economy by way of its 2.0L DOHC Ti-VCT direct-injection in-line four mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2012 Ford Fiesta SE with SFE sports 29city and 40highway mpg with its 1.6L DOHC Ti-VCT in-line four and PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission.
In addition to these fuel-economical vehicles there are several tips we all may use to increase our fuel economy in our every day lives.
- Watch Your Speed - aim for a constant speed
- Accelerate and Brake Smoothly - allow for more time to brake and accelerate gradually
- Idling - turn off the engine when idling for more than 30 seconds
- Tire Inflation - underinflated tires increase roling resistance and reduce economy
- Tune-Ups - keep your car in good operating condition, tune-ups and alignments
- Travel Light - remove excess weight to increase fuel economy
- Manage Climate Control - use it selectively to put less load on the engine
- Close Windows at Higher Speeds - decreses aerodynamic drag
- Lubrication - use the lubes recommended in the Owner Guide
- Consolidate Trips - combine errands into a single trip, plan your routes

From Lincoln Frontline July-August 2011
By 2012, mobile phone applications (apps) are expected to become a $4 billion industry. Analysts predict that the mobile phone will become the primary source for internet access by 2015. Clearly, smartphones and their accompanying apps are permeating our lives at a rapid pace. Ford/Lincoln understands advanced technology is the future and, therefore, offers hands-free, voice-activated SYNC, which enables drivers to conveniently integrate certain popular smartphone apps in their vehicle, rather than simply on their phone.
SYNC AppLink, first avalable on the 2012 Lincoln MKZ and Navigator, is an in-vehicle technology feature to deliver voice control of smartphone apps.
Listening to Pandora's user-cusomized radio stations in the car on my daily commute? Sending tweets to twitter via voice, without even taking my eyes off the road? The future looks bright indeed.

The Ford Fusion
Released in 2006, the Fusion was the first of the "New Face of Ford" cars, sporting the brand's now recognizable 3-bar grill. The Fusion is available with many different configurations from interior accents to the engine. Edmund's had the following to say about the Ford Fusion: "The well-rounded Ford Fusion is one of our top picks for a midsize family sedan. Spacious interior, engaging handling, comfortable ride, excellent Ford Sync system, good four-cylinder fuel economy, and available all-wheel drive.” This might be part of the reason the Fusion is the face of Ford Racing in NASCAR.
Ed Kohen Ford Lincoln in Greenville have several pre-owned Ford Fusions now in stock. To make this even more exciting, the Ford Fusion is on sale, starting at just $16,995 from now through the end of September. Come in and test-drive the Ford Fusion today!

The EcoBoost Engine
Getting behind the wheel of a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO... I was already excited as I had previously experienced Ford's powerful EcoBoost engine in the F-150 series trucks. After driving one and looking under the hood, I was amazed that it was "only" a V6. How could a V6 seem to have so much power, and accelerate so smoothly? With a little research here is what I found:
EcoBoost is a family of turbocharged and direct injected six-cylinder and four-cylinder gasoline engines produced by the Ford Motor Company. Engines equipped with EcoBoost technology are designed to deliver power and torque consistent with larger displacement, naturally aspirated engines while achieving approximately 20% better fuel efficiency and 15% reduced greenhouse emissions than these same engines. Relative to the power output and fuel efficiency of hybrid and diesel technologies, Ford sees EcoBoost as an affordable and versatile alternative and intends on using it extensively in future vehicle applications.
Ford has enabled horsepower while still being fuel efficient and evironmentally aware. Stop in today to drive the Taurus SHO, or an F-150 with fords Ecoboost technology, and be prepaired to ask yourself, "This isn't a V8?!"

EcoMode of Ford Focus to help increase fuel economy
The software application that comes with the Ford Focus can help drivers improve their green driving skills by offering hints through a scoring system. The EcoMode evaluates the driving behaviour by looking into gear shifting, speed, and anticipation.
During internal testings, Ford discovered that good eco-driving skills can boost fuel economy by as much as 24%. Projecting the impact of this, Ford estimates that if Americans will try to have good eco-driving skills and improve their own fuel economy by 15%, there will be a total savings of 22 billion gallons of fuel each year.
Here are some of the basic preachings of driving in EcoMode:
Make use of the highest possible drivable gear
Accelerate and decelarate smoothly
Anticipate the flow of traffic
maintain your speeds constantly
Do not idle excessively
Do not take short trips with your engine cold
The software looks at the parameters for gear shifting and sees if the above behavior patterns are followed. It also checks if the driver adjusts the speed so he or she will not be going heavy on the acceleration or braking. Cruising on open roads to be more efficient is also monitored.
Ford Focus drivers can also review the results and compare it with the optimized driving patters as recommended by the software. During driving, the system gives feedback to the driver on the cluster screen and encourages him or her to earn more leaves for every discipline.
The Focus also has an option Eco-Route which is a map-based navigation system.

The all new Global Ford Ranger
Our friends over @ PUTC have posted some good information on the all-new Global Ranger. And by Global, we mean it’s available in over 180 countries, but not US and Canada.
Ford says it’s too close to the size of the F-150 and it wouldn’t sell well in North America. If you actually look at the specs… well we’re not so sure. It’s just a few inches bigger than the current Ranger.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve asked a few owners I know, and they don’t consider the F150 as a replacement for their beloved Rangers! They consider the F150 too big for their needs.
For more info on the truck Ford doesn’t want you to own, see this link, and this one.
Ford has told us that the current Ranger plant (for North America) will be shutting down at the end of 2011 and the Ranger production will end. They haven’t said a word about what will replace the truck, if anything.
If you think you’d like to own one of these, by all means, let Ford know. We think there’s more demand for this truck than Ford realizes.

Ford Uses Google Prediction To Save Fuel And Time
During this week’s Google I/O conference in San Francisco, Ford unveiled new technology that relies on the search giant’s new Prediction API. By tapping into Google’s Prediction API, Ford will be able to gather historical commute and errand data, and then optimize your route depending on traffic, weather and a host of other information.
By leveraging the location-based uses of Google’s API, Ford developers will be able to improve fuel- or hybrid-electric efficiency while also reducing overall commute times.
“The Google Prediction API allows us to utilize information that an individual driver creates over time and make that information actionable,” said Ryan McGee, technical expert, Vehicle Controls Architecture and Algorithm Design, Ford Research and Innovation. “Between Google Prediction and our own research, we are discovering ways to make information work for the driver and help deliver optimal vehicle performance.”
Using historical driving behavior, Google Prediction will be able to predict a driver’s destination and how to optimize driving performance to and from that location. If a route of travel is predicted, on-board systems could then optimize energy usage.
“Once the destination is confirmed, the vehicle would have instant access to a variety of real-time information so it can optimize its performance, even against factors that the driver may not be aware of, such as an EV-only zone,” said McGee.
Researchers at Ford want to develop systems that anticipate the needs of each individual driver. By accounting for the driving style of each driver, these systems could maximize energy efficiency without taking away from the overall driving experience.
“It’s about pure customer benefit and creating individualized and optimized experiences – the right one for each person, vehicle and situation.”

Take advantage of the market on used trucks
The weather is great and so are the deals. If you are looking for a truck don't hesitate because of gas prices. It’s because of the gas prices that the prices of trucks are low right now. Buy the truck now and sacrifice some as money to get ahead when the gas goes back down. This happened two years ago when we had the first gas spike. The smart buyers went out and got a screaming deal on a truck and when the gas prices went down and the truck prices rose, those people found themselves in a very equitable position. They could easily sell and make money, be happy they got a sweet deal or trade in with equity for their next car. So buyers be smart and take advantage of the market. We have tons of used trucks out here and are ready to sell them. Stop in and check them out.

Gas is going up...
Before you spend any more money at the pump you should think about investing in the Ford Fiesta. 40 MPG! With gas just now at $3.55 a gallon here in Greenville and speculation of it hitting $5.00 a gallon 40mpg's will save you quite a bit of money. Remember, its about money distribution...wheather you have a regular payment on a used car and pay more at the pump or pay a little more on a brand new car (or less or the same) and pay much less at the pump...you still will save money. Call Tyler at Ed Koehn Ford to have him do some simple calculations and see if it makes sense for you or not,
